Adding Sparkle To The Smile
Call it an oral fashion statement to stand out
among ordinary mortals or simply an effort to blend in
with the bold and the beautiful.
Tooth jewellery or 'skyce’ is the latest thing in
town, if dental surgeons are to be believed. They say
city slickers, mostly young males, are aware of the
option and are increasingly going for that extra
sparkle in their smile.
Manimajra-based dental surgeon Dr Rahul Kalra says,
“The new generation is willing to experiment. Which
explains why “skyce” is fast-becoming a fashion
accessory. It has been in the market for around a
year, but it has become all the rage only in the past
few months.”
Tooth jewellery comes in the form of diamond studs,
tooth rings and even tooth tattoos.
Priced between Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,000, diamond studs
are most popular and are mounted on lateral incisors.
The imported studs come in different sizes and colours,
including sapphire blue and crystal.
Kalra maintains, “The trend is catching up with
males, especially those heading towards foreign
destinations for study or leisure. However, not many
girls are visiting clinics and enquiring about tooth
jewellery. But it is only a matter of time before
‘skyce’ acquires universal appeal.
Tooth studs are comparable with ear studs.” Dr JS
Batth, a dental surgeon based in Sector 10, Panchkula,
says, “People are showing up at dental clinics to
know more about tooth jewellery.”
The advantage of tooth studs and rings is that these
can be fixed and removed with equal ease, as the
procedure is non-invasive.
He says, ”If somebody thinks he or she was better
off without tooth jewellery.”

What’s more, tooth jewellery can be fixed again at a
later stage.”
However, Ashima Goyal, assistant professor, Department
of oral health sciences, PGI, says, “I do not think
tooth jewellery has become fashionable in Chandigarh.
Actually, we at PGI have not heard much about it.
Perhaps, private dentists are offering such
services.”
